ROANOKE ISLAND - by Anh Doan

Roanoke Island

In 1585, Queen Elizabeth sent Sir Walter Raleigh with 108 people to Virginia so she can gain more power by ruling more land. But they got as far to Roanoke Island. They had many hardships so all but 15 went back to England. In 1587, Queen Elizabeth sent John Smith and his group of 108 to Virginia. Again they can only go far to Roanoke Island. Once they got there the 15 people from the first group was gone. John Smith went back to England so he can get more supplies. But since there was war, John White couldn’t go back to the Island because all the ships were needed for the war. In 1590, John White returned to Roanoke Island but, his group was missing! There was no trace but a word “Croatoan” was carved on a tree. His books were ruined by rain, and armors were rusted. Now Roanoke Island is on the eastern part on North Carolina. Today there are Indians calling themselves Croatoans on the hills of Roanoke Island. Many of them have English names.

My Trip to Roanoke Island

They all say, Roanoke Island had has some mysteries that hasn’t been solved yet. Well now it’s my turn to get to that level with my other settlers. As my head starts to heat up from the boiling, hot sun… I was searching for any fishes or crabs swimming by. Our leader, John White, returned to England for more supplies. By the time he was gone, we didn’t have much water and food. We couldn’t drink salt water because it wasn’t healthy. We received food for only once a week. Our stomachs were growling and hurting. We couldn’t change into any clothes that are clean. There wasn’t any shoe stores around. Just plain, white, and hot sand underneath our feet .And all around us was an entire acre of salt water. One day, a person saw lots of fishes swimming here and there and everywhere! I took my bold stick and began punching on any fishes I can aim on. My friend made a fire out of timber wood. It wasn’t that long until the fire went out right in the middle of our cooking. Half was raw and the other was cooked. We didn’t have a choice so we shared for each person. One fish being shared to 108 people was very tiring. We shared 1 inch of meat to everyone. And for the bones will be wasted out on sea.

It has been a year already and John White hasn’t come yet. 3 people died from dehydration and some of us are already sick. The story may be passed on to the mystery of the real Roanoke Island story.

Twee verhalen van een jonge wereldreizigster; een echt en een bedacht verhaal. Veel van de familie komt samen, reizen, vertellen, beschrijven en schrijven. Er zal nog veel volgen denk ik.
