Ba Ngoai,

You were the person who loved me so much
to take care of me when I was a baby.
You were the person who loved me so much
to let me sleep with you on your bed.
You were the person who loved me so much
to sing me songs whenever I asked.
You were the person who loved me so much
to hold me whenever I cried.
You were the person who loved me so much
to feed me only the best food you cooked.
You were the person who loved me so much
to watch me grow up every year.
You were the person who loved me so much
to tell me your advice when I was old enough.
You were the person who loved me so much
to push me towards my goals.
You were the person who loved me so much
to watch me when I succeeded.
You were the person who loved me so much
to care about me no matter what.
You were the person who loved me so much
to be my grandmother.
I love you so much that it’s hard for me to see you go.
But I do know that you will always be the person
who loves me even when you’re not here.
Thank you for loving me completely for 21 years.
Loving you always,

Phuong Vi

An angel, a mother, and wife all-in-one,
She was all about family and all about fun.
Metaphorically sticky like tape and glue,
Stuck family together and kept me with you.
She traveled the world and mothered seven offspring,
Had seventeen grandchildren, isn’t that something?
Strawberry shakes after a long day outdoors,
Soy ba for lunch, then beef noodles and more.

We played, we talked, then we slept on the floor;
A day at my grandma’s, I couldn’t ask for more.
This poem’s not beautiful, wonderful, or moving.
It’s not at all lively, pretty, or soothing.
It won’t make you smile, it’s not too unique;
And I’m pretty sure it doesn’t own a beauty boutique.
HOWEVER… if you want something with the traits listed above,
Remember my grandmother and send all your love.

Cuong

Dear Vi Cuong,

I like your poems.
Thu and An were more than spoiled as they grew up with their grand parents. The first thing Cu Bi said every day as soon as he came home after school was: " Ba` oi, co gi an khong?"
