The 46-year-old artist is surrounded by ceramic vases, bamboo blinds, artwork of all shapes and sizes peeking out of half-opened boxes, pieces of Styrofoam and packing material. Cigarette butts fume in ashtrays on a table next to a plastic cup filled iced Vietnamese coffee....
... Doan left behind not only the place he calls his "dear Fatherland", but a thriving art and interior decorating business and a factory in Hocmon Diestrict of South Vietnam where about 50 people carved, wove and painted all sorts of artifacts - executing Doan's design and vision.
But for Doan, staying back in Vietnam was not a choice ....
Next month, he plans to open up DV Gallery, a space on Beach Boulevard close to Little Saigon where he hopes to display and sell his work and other imports from Vietnam....
